The real wood vermin: the larva / grub of insects The real wood vermin is the larva, with its strong chops it gnaws small channels within timber. If the larva grows, it looses its skin 4 times, before it enters in stadium of a cocoon. For becoming a cocoon it creates a so called cradle out of wood shavings not deep under surface. The pupation is a kind of phase of calmness, the cocoon does not eat anymore and it develops to the real insect. The insect has to gnaw through the small layer of wood and may fly away. In his short life the beetle arranges everything for reproduction. The female lays the eggs into the bark (fresh wood insects) or into small cracks (storing wood vermin). The so called affection of wood worm - grub of a larva till pupation is the most important wood vermin. Quelle: Gesamtverband Deutscher Holzhandel / German Timber Trade Federation
