Appearance:

Middle-, North- and Eastern Europe; in the mountains and lowlands, in "Fichtelgebirge" up to 750 m, in the Bavarian forest up to 900 m, in the Black Forest to 950 m, Auvergne to 1300m, in the Bavarian Alps up to 1600 m, in Engadin and Wallis to 2100 m height above sea level; prefers loose, sandy-clayey ground, grows in mountains also on scree and cliffs, on southern dry inclination; adaptable to different climate conditions is not sensitive to frost; pure pine areas mostly in North- and North-East Europe, otherwise within in spruce woods, also together with larch and hardwoods, economically the most important type of pine.



Advices:

The living pines are tapped for resin to produce turpentine, turpentine-oil and colophony etc; pine-needles deliver pine-oil Oleum pini silvestris; Attention! Pine wood that became blue shows a higher absorption of water and like this a higher danger of pest / fungi; sudden drying and treatment with protection means do still allow the processing; pine splint wood may be impregnated; classification of pine depending on the gross density / dry density: soft pines < 450 kg/m3 dry density, hard pines > 450 kg/m3, there from heavy and rich of resin 450...650 kg/m3 (am/nm), less heavy and poor of resin 450...550 kg/m3 (am/as/eur).


Working Properties:   It works easily and well with both hand and machine tools. It is capable of a smooth, clean finish. Can be glued, stained, varnished and painted satisfactorily.

Physical Properties:   It dries rapidly but owing to its tendency to develop sap stain it should be anti-stain dipped. For its weight it is strong and moderately hard.

Main Uses:   Constructional work, joinery, carcassing, house building.

Durability:
  Non durable.
